Now that spring is approaching, homeowners have to contend with a phenomenon that many may not be aware of, or may even be aware of, but simply don’t know any effective way of dealing with it. Recent studies show that as much as 40% of ambient heat in households is due to heat gain, and mostly, the only way people know how to deal with this is to react to the accumulated heat, rather than prevent it, resulting in compounded expenses.

An equally recent study has revealed that retractable awnings can reduce heat gain by as much as 80%, primarily by preventing the entrance of excess heat into a building, usually through least expected areas, such as doorways and glass windows. Using retractable awnings, the reduction of heat gain indoors can result in a surprising lowering of indoor temperatures by as much as 10 to 15 degrees, which makes it comfortable enough to preclude the use of an air conditioner to cool the area.

Awnings are also able to effectively cut the glare of sunlight without completely obscuring the natural light in area and clouding it in darkness, thus allowing enough light indoors to allow people to see comfortably without really needing to switch on additional electric lights.

Other than cutting the heat gain indoors, retractable awnings effectively cut the direct heat and glare of direct sunlight outdoors, allowing restaurants, for example, to extend their business area well outdoors, enabling them to offer an alfresco eating experience to customers. The comfortable shade provided by retractable awnings in this application is far better than the oversized umbrellas usually propped up in the middle of outdoor tables, as retractable awnings are securely anchored by a sturdy frame, rather than a single pole in the middle of a round table.
